Periodontics - Fads, Facts and Fallacies

DR. LAURENCE S. AMBROSE, DDS, MS

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

When it comes to the clinical practice of dentistry, oftentimes we are our own worst enemies. The constant barrage of shiny new objects for sale can lead us away from an evidence-based approach to care. This presentation will discuss common misconceptions regarding the perio-systemic connection, managing high blood pressure, implant bone loss and movement of fully integrated implants. The utility of various antiseptic mouthrinses will be reviewed along with a simple way for dental hygienists to treat peri-implantitis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the presentation, attendees will:

  • Gain confidence in measuring and interpreting vital signs that affect safe patient care
  • Have a deeper understanding of the consequences of improper implant placement
  • Understand the benefits and limits of mouthwashes and subgingival irrigants
  • Learn about a specific nonsurgical treatment for peri-implantitis

About Laurence S. Ambrose:

Laurence S. Ambrose, DDS, MS, is a board certified periodontist who has been practicing and teaching dentistry for over thirty years. He has worked for the United States Public Health Service and the Department of Veterans Affairs and currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona. POWER OFF BIOFILM!

NANCY J. MILLER RDH, BA

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

Staying current with clinical applications of power instruments has a new level of importance in this era of technology and the Oral Systemic Link research. Understanding how to get the most out of power scalers and air polishers leads to more time efficiency, better treatment results, and better ergonomics for the hygienist.

  • While air polishers have been around for 4 decades, their use was generally restricted to supragingival stain removal. Like ultrasonics with micro tips, their use with finer size powder particles has evolved into the next treatment modality for preventative and periodontal therapy. What do you need to know about this latest technological application? How can you incorporate it into your clinical routine? How can they be used around implants? We now have Perio Classifications for Implants and how can we use Power Air Streaming in practice?
  • While micro ultrasonics are now considered standard of care in periodontal therapy, what else are you using them for? What technological advances have there been since you were in school or your last CE Course? Is there really a difference between piezoelectric technology and magnetostrictive units? Are there any new inserts on the market? Is there any superior way to adapt ultrasonic instruments to the type of patient in your chair?

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Participants will lean
  • Biofilms role in inflammatory disease
  • Air polishing subgingivally using glycine perio powders
  • Implant maintenance and peri-mucositis treatment following AAP codes
  • Contrasts in piezoelectric/magnetostrictive technologies
  • Latest information on generators and inserts
  • Patient case studies on power instrument protocols
  • Ergonomics and Aerosol control hints

About NANCY J. MILLER:

Nancy Miller owns UltraConcepts specializing in power instrumentation instruction, is a Key Opinion Leader and product evaluator for Hu-Friedy Group since 1995, a clinical advisor for Jameson Group since 1998, and is a panelist on the Cellerant Group for Best of Class Hygiene Awards, debuting in 2021.
