Periodontal Disease and Whole-Body Health: Call to Action

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The body of research connecting periodontal disease with systemic conditions is expanding rapidly. This session highlights the mounting evidence for the biological pathways linking periodontal disease to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and more. We will clarify the distinction between association and causation, examine the influence of confounders, and review how to accurately interpret findings from published studies. Current clinical guidelines from professional organizations will be covered, along with practical strategies for integrating this evidence into everyday care, underscoring the imperative to act on what we know now.

  • Explain the relationships between periodontal disease and systemic diseases and conditions.
  • Separate association from causation and identify risk factors.
  • Translate the evidence on periodontal-systemic links into daily clinical practice.

About SATISH S. KUMAR:

Dr. Satish Kumar is a tenured Professor and Director of Periodontics at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, where he focuses on surgical care, teaching, research, and clinical administration. He previously served on the faculties of the University of Southern California and the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Kumar completed advanced specialty training in periodontics, implant surgery, oral medicine, TMD, and orofacial pain at USC and is a board-certified Diplomate in all three specialties. He has a strong research background in oral cancer, clinical research design, and evidence-based healthcare and has published more than 75 scientific works. A Fellow of both the ADEA Leadership Institute and the American College of Dentists, he is also a certified evidence reviewer for the ADA and a frequent national lecturer. Dr. Kumar has earned multiple national awards and holds leadership roles with the Western Society of Periodontology and several professional organizations.

Providing Care in a Marijuana Legal World

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

Have you thought about how medical and recreational marijuana use may impact you as a practitioner? This course will discuss your possible liabilities in the treatment of patients using this drug. With states legalizing marijuana, it will be challenging to address just how to safely provide dentistry to our patients. We’ll discuss how to make common sense decisions on a topic that may prove to be very challenging in the future. We will also discuss the basic history, method of use, myths, and provide a general knowledge of this complex and ever-changing topic.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • This class will provide some of the history of marijuana
  • This course will describe marijuana and how it is used.
  • The class will define physical implications of medical and recreational marijuana use.
  • This class will list the effects of marijuana use on the dentition and oral tissue.
  • The course will discuss contraindications in providing dentistry to patients using marijuana in a medical or recreational manner

About HEATHER ROGERS:

Heather Rogers began her career in dental hygiene in 1999 when she graduated from the College of Southern Nevada. She has worked in prosthodontics, periodontics, and general dentistry. Heather discovered her love for presenting educational courses while achieving her bachelor’s degree and being involved with her professional association. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2010 and is currently providing continuing education for professionals in communications, diabetes, COPD, vaping, implant maintenance, probiotics, instrumentation, metabolic syndrome, marijuana, and infection control.
