COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The dental hygienist plays an integral role in the process of comprehensive diagnosis and delivering the treatment plan with the dentist. But how does the dental hygienist gather the necessary information, deliver, and educate the patient in an efficient and effective manner? This course will introduce technology, protocols, diagnostics, and communication skills to add value to the practice and provide the patient with highest quality of comprehensive care. Guided Biofilm Therapy, lasers, and voice activated charting systems will be introduced with therapeutic values to the patient and practitioner.

About LYNN ATKINSON:

Lynn Atkinson, RDH, has been a Registered Dental Hygienist for over 30 years. She graduated from Cypress College, California with a degree in Dental Hygiene. Her passion for utilizing technology while delivering the highest quality of patient care keeps her practicing four days a week as the Clinical Hygiene Director for a high-performing, patientoriented dental practice in Mission Viejo, California. Lynn lectures and provides clinical, hands-on training to dental professionals on successfully incorporating lasers and other adjunctive therapies into their protocols. For the past several years, Lynn has been a speaker at numerous conferences across the nation, speaking on a variety of topics. She lectures locally in addition to her hands-on courses, has authored several published articles, and has been a guest speaker on industry audio media platforms, enjoyed nationwide. Lynn is an active member and participant of multiple dental associations and organizations. Lynn is a key opinion leader for several dental manufacturers and companies, as well as a speaker and trainer for US EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy. She serves on the Board of Directors at the Academy of laser dentistry as Auxiliary Chair, a member of the ALD Speakers Bureau, Education, Conference and Testing Committees. Lynn is the honored recipient of the ALD 2022 Leon Goldman Clinical Excellence Award.

Down and Out or Down and About? Raising Awareness of Mental Health Issues in Dentistry

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

A plethora of mental health issues plague our society today and the dental community is not immune. Dental professionals encounter multiple stressors in the workplace which may result in significant anxiety, depression, and other emotional outcomes. The evidence concerning mental health issues nationwide and among dental professionals will be presented in this course along with signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Management and treatment strategies will be discussed, including approaches for suicide prevention. The knowledge obtained in the session can be utilized in personal as well as patient care for achieving whole body health in ourselves and our patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the evidence concerning mental health issues among dental professionals and patients.
  • Describe signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  • Discuss management strategies for anxiety, depression and suicide prevention.
  • Appreciate the importance of civic responsibility to assist all people with mental health issues

About SHERRI M. LUKES:

Sherri Lukes has been a dental hygienist for 42 years and holds advanced degrees in education. She is associate professor emerita, Southern Illinois University, where she taught oral pathology, public health, and multicultural dental hygiene. Research was concentrated in migrant oral health, oral pathology, and public health issues, resulting in multiple peer reviewed publications. Sherri enjoys integrating her years of experience into CE courses to empower dental professionals in the process of care. She is an approved speaker of and holds a pathology fellowship in the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, is a past president of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association, and a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Community service includes biannual, yearly trips to central/southern Mexico, delivering preventive care in an orphanage and remote villages. Honors include Community Service, Research, and Teacher of the Year awards while at SIU, IFLOSS Coalition/Illinois Department of Public Health Oral Health Champion Award and the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction.
