LECTURE: Comprehensive Care and Planning for the Dental Hygienist

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The dental hygienist plays an integral role in the process of comprehensive diagnosis and delivering the treatment plan with the dentist. But how does the dental hygienist gather the necessary information, deliver, and educate the patient in an efficient and effective manner? This course will introduce technology, protocols, diagnostics, and communication skills to add value to the practice and provide the patient with highest quality of comprehensive care. Guided Biofilm Therapy, lasers, and voice activated charting systems will be introduced with therapeutic values to the patient and practitioner.

About LYNN ATKINSON:

Lynn Atkinson, RDH, has been a Registered Dental Hygienist for over 30 years. She graduated from Cypress College, California with a degree in Dental Hygiene. Her passion for utilizing technology while delivering the highest quality of patient care keeps her practicing four days a week as the Clinical Hygiene Director for a high-performing, patientoriented dental practice in Mission Viejo, California. Lynn lectures and provides clinical, hands-on training to dental professionals on successfully incorporating lasers and other adjunctive therapies into their protocols. For the past several years, Lynn has been a speaker at numerous conferences across the nation, speaking on a variety of topics. She lectures locally in addition to her hands-on courses, has authored several published articles, and has been a guest speaker on industry audio media platforms, enjoyed nationwide. Lynn is an active member and participant of multiple dental associations and organizations. Lynn is a key opinion leader for several dental manufacturers and companies, as well as a speaker and trainer for US EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy. She serves on the Board of Directors at the Academy of laser dentistry as Auxiliary Chair, a member of the ALD Speakers Bureau, Education, Conference and Testing Committees. Lynn is the honored recipient of the ALD 2022 Leon Goldman Clinical Excellence Award.

HANDS-ON WORKSHOP - Diode Lasers Used in the Hygiene Practice

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The Diode laser has become the most utilized laser in dentistry today especially in the hygiene department. This course will give you hands on techniques used in the hygiene practice. Mechanisms, safety, tips, and protocols will be reviewed, and attendees will have an opportunity to demonstrate the use of the lasers for Laser bacterial reduction, laser assisted periodontal therapy, hemostasis, and aphthous ulcers/herpetic lesions on porcine jaw.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Operate the laser device understanding basic biologic interactions.
  • Demonstrate competency in using the laser with hygiene procedures.
  • Understand the difference in the procedures of laser bacterial reduction and laser assisted periodontal therapy.

When, Why, and How to Refer to a Periodontist

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

There are many misconceptions today regarding referral of a patient to a specialist. In this presentation, Dr. Kepic will clarify when it is reasonable to treat and keep the patient in the general dentist’s office. He will also review the process as to when it is appropriate to seek the advice of a periodontist.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • List the clinical findings that are key to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.
  • Review the important intraoral radiographic findings and cone beam images.
  • After determining an accurate diagnosis, describe etiology and prognosis.

Dr. Thomas J. Kepic is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is a former Director for the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Kepic was president for the California Society of Periodontists in 2011 and is past president of the WSP. He is a guest lecturer at several universities in the U.S. and abroad and has published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Kepic practices in Upland, California.

What Is Sugar and Why Do We Care?

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

This course will break down the components of sugar and discuss addictive properties.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Highlight where sugar is found and how it contributes to inflammation and disease.
  • The class will educate practitioners how to determine quantities of sugar and added sugar in food.
  • We will demonstrate how to interview patients about their personal sugar intake.
  • Teach practitioners how to actively change oral flora and introduce products that will deliver the best prevention modes for each patient.

About HEATHER ROGERS

Heather M. Rogers began her career in dental hygiene in 1999 when she graduated from the College of Southern Nevada. She has worked in prosthodontics, periodontics, and general dentistry. Heather discovered her love for presenting educational courses while achieving her bachelor’s degree and being involved with her professional association. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2010 and is currently providing continuing education for professionals in communications, diabetes, implant maintenance, probiotics, infection control, COPD, marijuana, and vaping.

Oral healthcare products are being purchased, yet we still have a high prevalence of gum disease. Dental professionals should be offering an alternative to floss, as this could likely impact the amount of gingivitis and periodontitis we see on a daily basis. We will discuss the history of interdental cleaning, the different devices, and how to use them. By looking at clinical photos, illustrations, videos, frequently asked questions, and research, you will feel confident in giving your homecare recommendations.

  • Explain the differences and indications for use between different interdental devices.
  • Deliver proper instructions for the use of different interdental devices.
  • Appraise literature to understand the efficacy of different interdental devices.
  • Decide individualized home care recommendations based on the patient’s needs, your clinical judgement, and research.

About HEATHER WONG:

Heather Wong, MSDH, RDH is the Professional Relations Manager for TePe Oral Health Care. She has over 11 years’ experience working clinically as a hygienist in both periodontal and general practices. Heather has been adjunct faculty at both Pacific University and Pasadena Community College, where she currently serves on the advisory board. She has served and supported the ADHA at both the state and local levels as Treasurer, Trustee, and as a delegate, as well as a member of the CDHA. Heather has presented CE lectures with dental hygiene associations (state and national), Western Society of Periodontology, California Society of Periodontology, American Dental Hygiene Association annual conference, and many webinars with TePe. Her research is focused on homecare and habit formation.
