Periodontitis: Ignore, Treat or Panic and Refer

CHARLES M. COBB, DDS, MS, PhD

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The presentation is based on a series of papers published in 2021-22 that address the lack of treatment guidelines for periodontitis. The presentation will address how this lack therapy guidance has led to the proliferation of treatments claiming a “cure” for periodontal disease, most without supporting evidence. The 2018 classification for periodontal and peri-implant diseases will be explained and how the classification helps determine treatment. Recent research on the diseased root surface will be presented and related to the choice of periodontal therapy for the specific stage of disease.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Become familiar with the 2018 classification of periodontal and peri-implant disease, how to use it for establishing a diagnosis, and what the therapy guidelines are for the various stages of periodontitis.
  • Lear the clinical characteristics of the “diseased root surface”, i.e., significance of surface roughness, root
invasive bacteria, “fractured calculus”, cytotoxicity of particulate calculus, etc.
  • Know the objectives and limitations of nonsurgical periodontal therapy in terms of long-term treatment
    outcomes.
  • Be familiar with the “latest fad cures” for periodontitis, the lack of an evidence base, and the ethical issues
associated with their promotion, e.g., probiotics, oil pulling, various oral rinses, use of trays loaded with H2O2
or tetracycline gel, and specific wavelengths of lasers.

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

Updated protocols assist us in determining our patient’s specific needs. As we move towards a more collaborative profession, we need to embrace these updates to identify those needs. We are presented with continuous challenges of new advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary refer- rals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to be utilized.

What to “KNOW” for Your Patient to Say “YES”

Tracy Anderson Butler
Tracy Anderson Butler, CRDH, MFT

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

Your patients are consumers and dentistry for the most part remains an elective service, leaving dental professionals vying for the expendable dollars of patients. We have all heard, “people buy what they want, not what they need.” Dentistry is not excluded from this value statement. How then do we compete against the major expendable income choices of our patients, such as smartphones, vacations, and entertainment. This program focuses on the foundational approach to establish clearly defined value building exercises with patients, yielding an increase in value for your dentistry and motivated patient. Emphasis on effective prompting between hygienist and dentist will elevate simple best practices you can implement Monday morning.

Periodontal Therapy - Are We in the Post-Surgery Era for Ad- vanced Disease?

KRISTEN RANALDO, RDH, BSDH
DAVID SCHARF, DMD, PERIODONTIST

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

Traditionally, periodontal therapy consisted of SRP and then flap surgery and bone regeneration for sites that didn’t respond. Advances in technology have completely changed the periodontal treatment paradigm. The use of the periodontal endoscope and NdYAG laser have provided a quantum leap in our ability to treat advanced periodontal disease in a conservative fashion. This fast moving and exciting program will discuss these changes and empower the audience to treat advance periodontal disease more conservatively.
