The Diode laser has become the most utilized laser in dentistry today especially in the hygiene department. Diode lasers are soft-tissue lasers that have many advantages over traditional surgical and therapeutic techniques including less pain, faster healing and preciseness, bacterial reduction, along with no contraindications. Some of the most commonly used Diode laser procedures in the hygiene department are Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR), Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT), hemostasis, and the treatment of oral lesions (aphthous ulcers/herpetic lesions), This course will present common diode laser procedures, techniques used in the hygiene department, and how to incorporate lasers into your practice. About LYNN ATKINSON:

Lynn Atkinson has been a Registered Dental Hygienist for 30 years. She graduated from Cypress College with a degree in Dental Hygiene in 1989 and was fortunate enough to be a part of several dental teams that incorporated state of the art technology. Since obtaining the Associate Fellowship Certification through the World Clinical Laser Institute (WCLI) in 1996, Lynn has been actively applying the use of dental lasers in hygiene on a daily basis. Lynn went on to achieve the Standard Proficiency Certification through the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) in 2013 and the Advanced Proficiency Certification Parts I and II in 2019. Lynn is currently practicing four days a week and is also training hygienists, doctors, and team members on the use of lasers along with strategies to incorporate dental lasers into their protocol with her company, Laser Focused Hygiene. Lynn is an active member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the American Dental Hygiene Association, the California Dental Hygiene Association and is the Hygiene Member on the Biolase Advisory Board. We are presented with continuous challenges of new advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need of information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary referrals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to be utilized.

Bioactive Materials to Enhance The Predictability of Periodontal and Alveolar Bone Regeneration

Biologic modifiers that are incorporated in graft procedures can assist in multiple aspects of guided bone and tissue regeneration. When placental allografts are used as barriers, many of their unique properties help our patients form bone more predictably. This immune-privileged tissue reduces inflammation at the wound site, decreasing patient discomfort. The laminins and other growth factors present will reduce the amount of flap opening under the incision line. The thin barrier will tightly adapt over the graft and defect edges, and any excess can be folded on top of itself. Other materials can be added to the graft itself or used as additional barriers. Some of the blood harvested autologous materials contain VEGF, TGF-B and other soluble growth factors. These will also increase the speed of healing in the grafted site, decrease swelling and reduce flap retraction over the wound site. Calcium sulphate can enhance angiogenesis, increase osteoblast migration and bone formation and physically improve the handling characteristics of the graft mixture. Live cell constructs taken from immune privileged tissues are showing promise in both periodontal and implant surgically related procedures.

Dr Horowitz completed a one-year general practice residency in dentistry, a 2-year residency in Periodontology at the Manhattan VA Hospital and NYU College of Dentistry (1983-1985), and a 2-year residency in Implant Dentistry at the NYU College of Dentistry (1994-1996). Dr Horowitz has a passion for the latest in dental technology and has stayed up-to-date on all of the current trends in inpatient care. He takes continuing education courses weekly and attends numerous major conferences each year to stay abreast of the latest developments in dentistry.
