For most patients their main dental experience is routine visits to the dental office for hygiene visits and annual exams. This is a critical time to recognize the need for orthodontic treatment and communicate those needs directly to the patient. This presentation will explore the conditions that benefit from orthodontic treatment, the common treatment modalities, and conditions often treated with clear aligners. This course explores the importance of recognizing the need for comprehensive orthodontic intervention, and is focused on treatment of the adult dentition. Focus will be given to discussing how orthodontic treatment can improve the periodontal condition. Doctors and hygienists are encouraged to take an active role in communication with the patient about the importance of orthodontic treatment to prevent the need for additional restorative and periodontal treatment. This course will also cover the importance of oral hygiene and the importance of a home care regiment in orthodontic patients.
Dr. Melissa Shotell is a Board Certified Orthodontist and practices in a multi-specialty practice in California, focusing on the interplay of orthodontics and restorative treatment. After completing dental school Dr. Shotell practiced as a restorative dentist for several years, then returned to school to complete a certificate and master’s degree in orthodontics from Loma Linda University. Dr. Shotell considers education to be her passion, and presents nationally and internationally on dental technology, clear aligners, digital workflow, and orthodontic techniques. She is also part-time clinical faculty in the orthodontics department at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and teaches in the CE department for the University of Alberta in Canada. Dr. Shotell is also a reviewer for the Journal of Aligner Orthodontics. Dr. Shotell shares tips and tricks on orthodontics and clear aligners on social media as alignerbee.
