About Karen Aguilar:

Karen Aguilar, RDH, BSDH, MPH, has been a figure in the dental hygiene field, with 30 years of experience in dentistry and 20 years as a dedicated practicing hygienist. Her academic journey commenced at Phoenix College, where she first laid the foundation for her career, later enriching her expertise with a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University. The unforeseen challenges and insights brought forth by the pandemic propelled Karen into a profound period of self-reflection, highlighting the critical gaps between dentistry and medicine, and underscoring the paramount importance of public health. This revelation inspired her to further her education, leading her to attain a master’s in public health from the prestigious UC Berkeley. For the past 13 years, Karen has specialized as a periodontal hygienist, with the last 12 years dedicated to integrating dental endoscopy into her practice. Her enthusiasm for dental endoscopy is not just professional; it’s a passion fueled by the tangible, positive outcomes she’s witnessed in her clinical work. Over a decade of employing this innovative technology, Karen has successfully treated hundreds of patients at various stages of periodontal disease, firmly establishing herself as an expert in the field. Karen’s commitment to minimally invasive treatment methods has not only enhanced her patients’ oral health but has fundamentally transformed their perception of dental care—encouraging a more eager return to the practice for follow-up and maintenance. Recognizing the profound impact of dental endoscopy, Karen, alongside her partner Aziz, launched PerioView a year ago. This biotech venture is the culmination of their shared dedication to elevating dental practice standards through the integration of dental endoscopy, driven by a deep belief in its benefits for both professionals and patients alike.

Practicing Proactive Local Anesthesia

KATHY BASSETT, BSDH, RDH, MED, FADHA
ART DIMARCO, DMD

Course Description:

The most common complication during dental procedures is inadequate anesthesia – yet in most cases it is preventable. Practicing Proactive Local Anesthesia means anticipating failure before it occurs: selecting the right technique, the right agent, and the right anatomy-based approach for each patient, rather than relying on a reactive “mix and match” when pain breaks through. This course distills the highest-yield, evidence-based insights into maxillary and mandibular anatomy and local anesthetic pharmacology into a focused, immediately applicable framework – equipping clinicians with a proactive strategy for reliably profound, predictable anesthesia. This proactive playbook cultivates a deliberate, anticipatory mindset – weighing the “pros and cons” of selected injection techniques against standard approaches to move beyond trial-and-error troubleshooting. Supplemental injections that leverage underappreciated anatomical features – including often-overlooked landmarks of the pterygomandibular region – along with targeted “rescue” strategies for challenging patients, will also be addressed. Completing the proactive framework, local anesthetic pharmacology and the clinical benefits of buffering agents will be examined – with course concepts reinforced through clinical case discussions.
