To prevent peri-implant complications, professional in-office assessment, maintenance, and home-care recommendations are vital. For long-term implant success, clinicians need to detect early signs of implant complications, diagnose any com[1]plications to provide early intervention and be able to provide peri-implant treatments. This course will follow the global healthy implant initiative for ceramic and titanium implants based on Susan’s Clinical White Paper: Long-term prevention of peri-implant complications and textbook: Peri-Implant Therapy for the Dental Hygienist: First & Second Editions.

The mere mention of HPV can strike fear in the hearts of dental clients. Oral lesions associated with human papillomavirus infection are of great significance to the dental community and their diagnosis prompts many questions and concerns from patients. Responsible for a variety of lesions in the oral cavity, it behoves the dental community to be knowledgeable about those of both low- and high-risk HPV subtypes. This course will present the various oral manifestations of HPV including squamous papilloma, focal epithelial hyperplasia (Heck’s disease), condyloma acuminatum, verruca vulgaris and HPV induced oropharyngeal cancer. Many images presented are from the presenter’s personal collection of lesion images accumulated over a 39-year dental career. Clinical appearance and treatment options will be included for each lesion, with a discussion concerning lesions to include in the differential diagnoses. Engaging patients in a dialogue about HPV lesions, especially concerning the link with oropharyngeal cancer will also be discussed.

5 million people in the United States are affected by dementia and this number is rising every year. While the science behind this mental condition is still developing, many articles suggest a link between dementia and periodontal disease. But how are the two diseases related? You may have seen punchlines such as “Take care of your oral health and prevent dementia.” Or “chronic periodontitis leads to brain inflammation, fewer brain cells, and more amyloid-beta (plaque found in tissues in patients with Alzheimer’s disease)”. Those simplified interpretations are dangerous! We know about the oral-systemic link and studies found associations between periodontitis and dementia. The two topics are being studied, and the advancement in science now gives a lot more information than we knew 10 years ago. In this course, we will take an evidence-based approach to understand how Periodontal disease and dementia/Alzheimer’s disease are related.

To deliver optimal dentistry in a gentle, pain-free manner the value of alternative treatment strategies must be considered from all perspectives. Expand your pain management perspective beyond basic manual techniques. Computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery (CCLAD) devices & techniques can enhance both clinician and patient comfort. This course and workshop merge clinical experience with current technology to achieve positive pain control outcomes. The focus will be on CCLAD alternatives to common manual injection syringes and techniques while leveraging anatomical advantages of “short needle IA”, “high IA block”, and “retromandibular” deliver techniques

This course, which can be specifically tailored to a state or province, will provide current information and guidelines for the safe treatment of patients and the protection of dental professionals. Infection Control recommendations and guidelines from OSAP, IPAC, CDC and various state, as well as provincial resources, will be presented and discussed. Infection control review with the office team aids in follow-through in the office on a day-to-day basis as well as the development of office systems. Each participant will leave with a wealth of references to utilize in the establishment of office protocols. Let’s talk about what the recommendations/guidelines advise should be done then evaluate what we are currently doing!

Have you thought about how medical and recreational marijuana use may impact you as a practitioner? This course will discuss treatment modalities of patients using this drug. With states legalizing marijuana, it will be challenging to address just how to safely provide dentistry to our patients. We’ll talk about how to make common-sense decisions on a topic that has become our new normal. We will also discuss the basic history, method of use, myths, and provide a general knowledge of this complex and ever-changing topic.

The Diode Laser has become the most utilized laser in dentistry today especially in the hygiene department. Diode lasers are soft-tissue lasers that have many ad[1]vantages over traditional surgical and therapeutic techniques including less pain, faster healing, preciseness, and bacterial reduction. Some of the most used diode laser procedures in the hygiene department are Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR), Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT), Haemostasis, and the treatment of oral lesions (aphthous ulcers, herpetic lesions, denture sores, etc). This course will introduce common diode laser procedures, techniques used in the hygiene department, and how to incorporate lasers into your practice.
