COURSES Advances for Esthetic Dental Implants: Minimally invasive techniques with Biologics (rhPDGF-BB) Marc L. Nevins, DMD, MMSC Course Description This presentation will provide a clinical update on minimally invasive approaches for Esthetic Implant Site Development. The utilization of recombinantly engineered platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) has accelerated the trend toward minimally invasive surgical procedures to preserve and enhance the esthetic foundation for dental implant supported restorations. This program will present guidelines for incremental levels of flap elevation from flapless to open procedures for implant site development. The use of growth factors has increased the ability for optimal hard and soft tissue regeneration with less invasive techniques. This course will provide a decision matrix for how to manage extraction site defects including whether to raise a flap and how to sequence soft tissue grafting. Learning Objectives

![]() Biologics in Oral Plastic Surgery Dr. Homa H. Zadeh, DDS, PHD Course Description Periodontal and peri-implant soft tissue deficiencies may be treated through a variety of approaches. Vestibular Incision Subperiosteal Tunnel Access (VISTA) technique has a number of advantages which makes this technique suitable for periodontal and peri-implant soft tissue regeneration. A variety of biologics have been used to enhance wound healing. Recombinant Platelet Derived Growth Factor-BB (rh-PDGF-BB) has had a long history of application in periodontal and peri-implant regeneration. This presentation will review the applications of rhPDGF-BB in VISTA for oral plastic surgery. The rationale, scientific evidence and clinical protocol for the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant deficiencies will be discussed. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course and hands-on workshop, participants will have gained knowledge and practical experience with:
Hands-on workshop Objectives Simulated exercises will be conducted to provide practical experience with procedures for soft tissue augmentation around teeth and implants:

![]() Biology of Regeneration for Clinicians: Why We Do What We Do Dr. Samuel E. Lynch, DMD, DMSc Course Description Dr. Lynch has pioneered the development and use of multiple new biologic regenerative therapies for use in dental and craniomaxillofacial surgery, orthopedic surgery and dermal wound healing. He and his colleagues led the early evaluation and adoption in N. America, S. America and Asia of both Bio-Oss and Bio-Gide, and discovered and developed GEM 21S for use in dental regenerative procedures, plus developed two similar products FDA approved as alternatives to autogenous bone grafts in orthopedic surgery. He will discuss the 1) biology of regeneration in the oral cavity; 2) how pure recombinant platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF-BB) compares to PRF and PRP preparations, Emdogain and other biologics promoted for use in dental surgery; 3) when membranes are necessary, and when they may in fact do more harm than good; 4) a fast, patient-friendly minimally invasive alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) technique following extraction; and 5) numerous clinical cases. The medical products that he and his team have developed have been used to improve the lives of over 2 million patients undergoing dental or orthopedic surgery or treatment for chronic nonhealing skin wounds. In his spare time, Dr. Lynch may be the only dentist in the U.S. to serve on the governing Board of Directors of a top 20 U.S. medical center. He is one of only six independent members on the governing Board of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he has chaired both the compensation committee which sets the compensation parameters for over 25,000 employees, as well as the audit committee. COURSES Change Your Thoughts to Improve Your Outcomes. An Update on Protocols, Products, and Treatment Options Tricia Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH Course Description Updated protocols assist us in determining our patient’s specific needs. As we move towards a more collaborative profession, we need to embrace these updates to identify those needs. We are presented with continuous challenges of new advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need of information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary referrals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to be utilized. Learning Objectives This course will provide information for the clinicians to be able to:

Providing Care in Marijuana Legal World Heather Rogers, RDH, BSDH Course Description Have you thought about how medical and recreational marijuana use may impact you as a practitioner? This course will discuss your possible liabilities in the treatment of patients using this drug. With states legalizing marijuana, it will be challenging to address just how to safely provide dentistry to our patients. We’ll discuss how to make common sense decisions on a topic that may prove to be very challenging in the future. We will also discuss the basic history, method of use, myths, and provide a general knowledge of this complex and ever-changing topic. Learning Objectives

![]() Effective Strategies to Improve Patient Home Care Heather Kelley, RDH, MSDH Course Description Course Description: Oral healthcare products are being purchased, yet we still have a high prevalence of gum disease. Dental professionals can bridge this gap by implementing effective strategies to improve patient home care. By identifying appropriate continuing care intervals and delivering oral hygiene instructions using evidence-based behavioral change frameworks, patients will improve their oral health. Lastly, not every patient is the same, so we must tailor the home care regimen recommendations. Based on research and specific patient needs, we will discuss what types of modalities to recommend.
