THE DANCE: When Interdisciplinary Periodontal and Prosthodontic Treatments Meet to Optimize Dental Care

Charles Goodacre
Dr. Charles J. Goodacre

COURSE DESCRIPTON:

The use of platelet concentrates has had a long history of use in various fields of medicine as an autologous source of growth factors fabricated utilizing centrifugation of blood under various conditions. While platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was proposed as a first-generation platelet concentrate over 3 decades ago, over the past 10 years, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has seen a steady increase in utilization for a variety of medical procedures due to its lack of anti-coagulation factors favouring fibrin clot formation and faster wound healing. More recently, the development of a liquid PRF provides a new formulation of liquid PRF without using anti-coagulation factors that may specifically be combined with currently available bone biomaterials favouring particle stability, angiogenesis and tissue integration. This talk aims to highlight the recent advancements made with respect to the newest formulations of platelet concentrates including recent developments in horizontal centrifugation and liquid, concentrated-PRF to further speed wound healing and tissue regeneration for various clinical indications faced in routine daily dental practice.

A large number of interdisciplinary patient treatments will be used to demonstrate the benefits of integrating periodontics and prosthodontics, thereby permitting the restoration of esthetics for patients that desire enhanced appearance. The retention of teeth with advanced dental disease is important to many patients and this course will show treatments where such teeth were maintained rather than be extracted. Also, the guidelines and clinical procedures used to select the type of all-ceramic crown material to be used in esthetically important situations will be presented along with the design principles used to encourage incisal migration of the mucosa when restoring natural teeth and implants. be extracted. Also, the guidelines and clinical procedures used to select the type of all-ceramic crown material to be used in esthetically important situations will be presented along with the design principles used to encourage incisal migration of the mucosa when restoring natural teeth and implants. Additionally, it is important to avoid complications when restoring implants and this presentation will include the design principles that enhance success through an

understanding of biomechanics and surgical procedures that support these principles.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Identify the benefits of integrating multiple disciplines of dentistry and the effect that has on the quality of care.
  • Describe treatment methods and clinical techniques that have been effectively used to retain teeth, improve esthetics through all-ceramic crown material selection, and encourage incisal migration of the soft tissue when restoring natural teeth and implants.
  • Understand the biomechanical design principles that minimize complications when restoring single implants
